Dell website slips up, leaks information on Streak tablet device

Friday, July 30, 2010

A recent mistake on Dell's website leaked information of its new tablet device previously announced to be released sometime this summer.

The mistake on the website informed users they could pre-order the device earlier this week. The company acted quickly to correct the mix-up.

"It was a mistake, and we took that information down this morning," Dell spokesman Matt Parretta told ComputerWorld. "I can say definitely that the Dell Streak won't go on sale in July."

The mix-up did reveal some details on the Dell Streak, which was announced in February of this year as a five-inch tablet device. The Streak will be compatible with AT&T's 3G network, instead of the previously expected T-Mobile network. Also, the company confirmed the device will run the Android 1.6 operating system, with the option to update to Android 2.2 later this year.

Also, leaked pricing information revealed the full retail price will reach $549, although customers can purchase the device for $299 by signing a new service contract with AT&T.

Dell is stepping into the tablet market at a highly competitive time in the industry. Since the release of Apple's iPad, competitors including HP and Asus have announced plans for tablet devices.ADNFCR-2356-ID-19913010-ADNFCR
